I have friends who are passionate birders but my abilities are limited to identifying the crows, pigeons, kites and parakeets that populate the trees around our building. Funnily enough, I've rarely seen any mynas here.

This was a lovely read. Had a smile throughout the essay! Hope you have more writing-inspiring sightings.

So enjoyed reading this, Doel. Your observations about mynahs made me laugh out loud, so apt! Watching fhe rhythm and routine of birds and other non-human residents is how I ground myself to a new neighbourhood. 🙂

Hahahaha! This is the funniest and the most frustrating part nai - "Sometimes I also mistake crows for other birds, and look away most embarrassed after all that careful study. "! Lovely essay doel! Maza agaya---

I had this bookmarked for so long because everything about it called for a deeper read. But whatever little snatches I read kept calling me back to it. And when I finished it this morning I felt all warm and calm inside. It takes a special craft to do this , Doel. Amazing stuff.

This is such a soothing essay, Doel. I enjoyed reading it :)

'How you can’t un-hear or un-see them, once you bring them in, and the wonder of their everyday motion.' - so true of observing nature around us. I was over 30 when I began to give attention to dogs, cats, birds and then trees around me. The world is a different place after that and I am a different person. It is so odd that we are not taught to observe nature in school itself. In fact, we are instructed to do the exact opposite - 'stop looking outside the window!'

"If crows are obvious and pigeons mundane, mynahs are the loud neighbourhood uncles and aunties. I saw a busy one today, shouting his head off as he walked up and down a stretch. I wonder what was on his mind. His to-do list? Just morning greetings? Singing? As you can see I’m easily entertained." - SUCH a joyful essay, Doel. Want to watch birds with you. And exchange notes on mynahs and red-vented bulbuls.

The keenness with which you watch birds while going about your daily routine is indeed remarkable. Very few of us, city dwellers, take the time out of our busy lives to observe the sights and sounds all around us. Kudos to your persistent observation.

Loved your bird watching episodes. Can’t believe within your work from home and household chores you manage to look out the windows in the afternoons to enjoy it all of these variety of birds while all others are in their siesta. All bird lovers like me can strongly relate well to your simple but engaging story. Now start filming them every once in a while on your mobile and add some clips to substantiate your stories. Seeing and hearing the birds takes one to a different world right? Let us know next how the birds enjoy flitting around all the yellow flowers of the coconut trees. I learnt a nice new word today too. ‘flitting’ . Nice expression for the chirpy birds flying & hopping around. I am hooked to your birdie stories now 😊 . Keep it coming 👍

Beautiful. It was during the lockdown that some of us started noticing the songs, dance and daily soap opera of the birds outside our windows.
